Browse Lewiston City Directories

A Lewiston city directory can place a family, shop, or telephone subscriber at an address between census years. Search a Lewiston city directory by surname first, then check spouse names, initials, occupations, street listings, and nearby entries. Idaho repositories hold overlapping runs, so a missing year at one archive may still turn up at another. Regional labels also matter because older books may group Lewiston with Clarkston, the Orchards, or nearby communities. A careful search records the volume year and page, checks the printed abbreviation key, and confirms the entry with a newspaper, map, cemetery record, or deed.

Lewiston Directory Collections by Year

Lewiston city directories survive in several complementary collections. The University of Idaho Special Collections holdings list gives exact telephone and business-directory years. The Idaho State Archives lists regional directories on microfilm, while FamilySearch supplies a digitized 1961 volume. The runs overlap but do not match perfectly. That is useful: a gap in the hardbound telephone shelf may be covered by a business volume or archive reel.

The UI telephone sequence includes 1920, 1929, 1937, 1943, 1946, 1949, most years from 1952 through 1978, and scattered later volumes through 2004. No official source establishes one final printed year for every directory type. Treat the listed years as holdings, not proof that no other edition exists.

Lewiston Publishers and Regional Labels

The earliest listed business book is the 1905 Nez Perce County directory. Bailey's Publishing issued Lewiston/Clarkston and vicinity editions in selected years from 1921/22 through 1956. Johnson's Publishing appears from 1958 through the later business holdings. Idaho State Archives reels add titles such as Lewiston City and Nez Perce-Asotin, plus a wider Clearwater, Latah, Lewis, Nez Perce, and Asotin grouping.

Those title changes are search instructions. A Lewiston resident may sit in a rural section, under Lewiston Orchards, or in a regional alphabet rather than a city-only list. The UI page also points Kooskia, Lapwai, and Lenore references back to its Lewiston group. Never turn “vicinity” into a claim about city limits.

Lewiston Library Directory Research

The Tsceminicum Club Idaho and Local History Room keeps non-circulating local directories, Lewiston and Nez Perce County books, Idaho Signal and Lewiston Teller back issues, and Lewiston Tribune microfilm dating to 1908. In-room sources let a researcher test a name across directories and newspapers without assuming an OCR search found every spelling.

The Library Research service offers free assistance, LiLI database routes for Idaho residents, and contact by email. Twin Rivers Genealogy Society volunteers assist Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Ask for a precise year, surname variant, street, or business. The collection description does not promise a separately titled criss-cross set or a complete obituary index.

The Library's research route is shown here before a visit: open the Lewiston Library research page.

Read a Lewiston Directory Entry

The digitized 1961 Lewiston, Idaho, and Clarkston, Washington volume contains 701 pages and describes an alphabetical list of city and rural residents. An entry can combine a head of household, spouse in parentheses, occupation or business, address, city code, and telephone exchange. OCR is only a pointer. Samples from a nearby run contain short forms such as sec, carp, slsmn, owner, Lew, and LO, so inspect the page image before copying a letter or number.

NameSurname, given name, middle initial, and sometimes spouse in parentheses
WorkOccupation, business, or associated firm when printed
PlaceHouse number, street, rural route, or business address
PhoneTelephone exchange and number in editions that include it
Area markLewiston, Orchards, Clarkston, rural, or another regional label
Criss-cross directory
A directory arranged by street and number rather than only by surname. No separately titled Lewiston run was verified, so ask whether a volume contains street pages.
Householder index
A name or address list centered on the principal listed person, not proof of every person in a household.
Abbreviation key
The volume's guide to short forms. Save it with the entry because meanings can change by publisher and year.

Lewiston Digital and Staff Directories

Not every directory bearing Lewiston's name is a household source. The City staff directory searches category, first name, and last name, then routes users to public departments. It identifies staff contacts, not private residents. The LC Valley Chamber active-member directory filters by category, type, location, ZIP, keyword, and alphabet. It reflects current membership and submitted business details, not a license finding.

These live directories can help interpret an old firm or department name, but they serve a different purpose from historical household books. Verify a business entity through state or city records when legal identity matters.

Compare the municipal search controls on the official City directory.

Lewiston Addresses Beyond Directories

Sanborn fire-insurance maps exist for Lewiston in 1888, 1891, 1896, 1900, 1904, 1909, and 1918. They can place a listed address near a dwelling, warehouse, school, park, or riverfront use, but they do not prove who occupied or owned it. Newspapers add obituaries, legal notices, advertisements, and social items. The Lewiston Tribune microfilm begins in 1908 according to the Library, while earlier Idaho Signal and Lewiston Teller material follows separate holdings.

This layered evidence fits Lewiston's history as a territorial capital, supply center, and Snake-Clearwater port. Records before the 1874 plat may use territorial, river-landing, township, or community labels. Later books can reflect the Orchards annexation and changing regional boundaries.

Search tip. Keep the old place label beside the modern address; Lewiston Orchards, LO, rural, and regional headings may lead to different pages.

Lewiston Archives and Society Files

The Nez Perce County Historical Society researches local people, places, photographs, maps, and topic files by appointment. Lewis-Clark State College archives add catalogs, newspapers, photographs, programs, publications, and yearbooks from 1893 forward. The college archive is closed-stack and asks researchers to give several days' notice.

Yearbooks can identify a campus connection and supply a photograph, while historical-society topic files may connect an address or business to a local event. Neither source replaces a city directory entry or deed. Record the collection name, folder, date, and page so another researcher can retrace the finding.

Trace Lewiston Families Across Directories

Family research works best as a sequence, not a single hit. A Lewiston city directory entry supplies a dated association among a name, address, phone, or business. A later book can show a move, a spouse-name change, or a new regional label. A census, newspaper, map, cemetery entry, or recorded instrument then tests what the directory suggests.

  1. Normalize the surname, initials, spouse, business, and old place names before searching.
  2. Check one directory near the known date, then the closest earlier and later volumes.
  3. Save the exact year, title, page, alphabetic entry, street page if present, and abbreviation key.
  4. Pair the address with a census-year source, newspaper image, or Sanborn sheet.
  5. Use Normal Hill Cemetery or a local obituary as a death clue, then confirm with a second record type.

A missing entry does not prove death or departure. The person may be unlisted, indexed under a spouse, placed in a rural section, or absent from a missing edition. The Lewiston past residents trail explains how to carry an address backward through deeds and maps after a directory match.
